Rail Europe trip protection

1. Overview 

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional protection product that allows travelers to cancel their trip for any reason and receive a partial refund. This is a new ancillary product, integrated into Rail Europe’s booking, invoicing, refund, and reconciliation flows. 

The protection contract cannot be modified; terms are predefined by the provider.

3. Eligibility and Display Rules 

CFAR appears only for eligible tickets based on fare type and booking context. 

Eligibility Rules 

  • Applies to: PTP tickets only 
  • Eligible fare types: Semi-flex, Non-flex 
  • Not eligible: Fully flexible fares (already refundable with more flexibility than CFAR) 

Mixed Fare Handling 

Displayed if at least one eligible ticket is in the order (semi or non-flex). 

CFAR cost is calculated only on eligible ticket value. 

Example: 

Semi-flex: €90 → eligible 

Flex: €184 → not eligible 

CFAR = €90 × 14.17% = €12.76 

Order-Level Logic 

  • One CFAR per order 
  • Covers outbound + inbound 
  • Not shown if all products are refundable 
  • Purchase ≥ 24h before departure 
  • Refund request allowed until 3h before departure

4. System Flow

Booking & Purchase Flow 

  1. Eligibility check 
  2. CFAR displayed at payment 
  3. Selection of CFAR 
  4. Added to total price 

Refund Flow 

  1. You will receive Koala claim link (email + visible in ERA booking page) 
  2. Submit claim via Koala portal,  
  3. *client can also ask for refund. if its on weekend and the client wishes to cancel, the client can submit a claim, and provide the bank details later 
  4. Koala pays refund directly to your bank account 

*Once the claim is accepted on time, you or the traveler have several years to provide bank details for refund processing.

Access and complete the claim form up to 3 hours before the start of your booking.

Please note that partial refunds are not available for bookings covered by Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) Protection.
