Italian Regional train automatic check-in

Trenitalia has incorporated a mandatory CHECK-IN policy for regional train ticket holders. As a result, any regional train tickets specifying "NOT VALID TO TRAVEL" will require a CHECK-IN to be performed, which would be a process to validate the tickets for usage.

We inform you hereby that, as of September 21st, 2024, check-in to travel on board regional trains with the Regional Digital Ticket (BDR) will be automated.

You will no longer be required to check in manually before train departure. The process will be automated.

It means that at the scheduled departure time (indicated on the ticket), if there are no date/time changes carried out by you, the ticket will be activated automatically.

From the moment of activation, it is no longer possible to carry out departure time/date changes.

The flexibility of changing the departure time/date countless times is therefore guaranteed, but this operation must always be carried out before the automatic activation of the ticket.

Please find here below a summary concerning the use of the Regional Digital Ticket (BDR):

Can the date and time be changed after the auto check-in?

  • New: Ticket activation via check-in will be done automatically by Trenitalia's systems at the departure time indicated on your regional train ticket.
  • You can make an unlimited number of date/time changes until midnight on the day before the train departure date.
  • On the day of travel, you can make an unlimited number of changes to the departure time until the time of automatic activation, the departure time indicated on the digital ticket.

When requested, you must show on board the train the QR code generated by the Trenitalia system, as already provided for the Regional Digital Ticket (BDR).

Please note that the Regional Digital Ticket (BDR) is nominative, personal and non-transferable to other passengers.

Important information and steps to follow:

How to access the generated QR code?

In line with Trenitalia’s check-in policy, digital tickets are automatically validated at the scheduled departure time. However, passengers will still need to show the QR codes of the regional digital tickets along with valid ID proof at the station entrance gates and on board the train, which can be retrieved at any time after purchase by visiting the Trenitalia website below and entering your email address and PNR/ticket code. This single ticket code will retrieve all QR codes associated with the trip.

Kindly be aware that these QR codes should not be printed. According to Trenitalia's guidelines, they must be displayed strictly on a mobile device. According to the General Conditions of Carriage, the inability to read the QR codes of regional digital tickets on a mobile device is considered a lack of tickets. Once the QR codes are activated, you will no longer be able to make changes to the departure time or date. Any changes must be made prior to the automatic activation of these tickets.
