II. Onboard services

Day trains 

Train Companies run many different types of trains across the rail network, offering a range of facilities. All trains are totally non-smoking and offer Standard seating.

Some trains offer additional facilities such as:

  • First Class seating
  • Catering
  • WiFi
  • Seat reservations (compulsory reservation may be required, such as LNER services in peak hours)

Night trains

Travel with comfort between London and Scotland with Caledonian sleepers or choose to visit the southwest of England in the Penwith district. Reservation is compulsory on those trains. Reclining seats are available through Easy Rail Access booking tool

Caledonian sleepers 

  • Available from London to Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
  • Seats: includes footrest and tray table. Personal night lights, charging points, complimentary sleep kit and dedicated food and drink menu.
  • Sleepers Classic Room (twin bunk beds, possibility of reserving for single use in 1st class): includes a in-room washbasin and complimentary toiletries, charging points,room service, keycard entry,temperature control and dimmable lights. To be booked locally.
  • Sleepers Club Room (twin bunk beds, possibility of reserving for single use in 1st class) & Sleepers Double Room (double bed): same services as the sleeper classic room with an en-suite with toilet and shower, breakfast included, station Lounge access, priority Club Car access and priority boarding.

Great Western Railway Night Riviera sleeper

  • Available from London Paddington to Penzance.
  • Seats: includes wide seats with loads of legroom, charging point, reclining seats, food and drink service on board in 1st class.
  • Sleepers Twin (2 berths) & Single (1berth): a washbasin,a snug duvet, fresh clean sheets and plump pillows, soap, towel and a wardrobe. Charging points and personal night lights, but also a small bottle of water and a light breakfast. To be booked locally.
  • First class lounges at Paddington, Truro, Penzance with shower rooms, can be used when you book a cabin.

III. Individual Fare types

  • Whether your clients are travelling for business, pleasure, alone or with friends and family, fares are designed to meet all clients’ needs. The fare range is very simple offering 3 types of fares classified as follows. 
  • Please refer to Easy Rail access for exact rules and conditions for each fare. It will show the fares that are eligible for the departure and route you have chosen. Anytime Day tickets are valid in the class of service shown for travel on any train on the date shown on your ticket and until 04:29 on the following day. The outward portion of an Anytime Day Return ticket is valid only in conjunction with the unused return portion. Break of journey is allowed on all Anytime Day tickets.
  • Children age 5-15 inclusive eligible for a discounted child fare.
  • Up to two children under 5 can travel free with each fare-paying passenger.
  • Tickets are valid ONLY on the date and train service(s) shown on the ticket(s).
  • Where applicable, you must travel in the Class and reserved seat(s) shown on the ticket(s).
  • Tickets may only be used on the services of the Train Company (or geographic route where applicable) shown next to ‘Route’ on the ticket.
  • If the ‘Route’ also states ‘and Connections’, travel is allowed on appropriate connecting trains where shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel iitinerary. 
  • If the route is prefixed with a +, the departure station does not have a kiosk or ticket window from which travellers can print their tickets. Travellers should retrieve their ticket from a nearby station prior to boarding the train.
  • If the route details show "UNDERGROUND" or a †, the ticket includes the cost of travelling across London on London Underground services.
  • To retrieve tickets at London Heathrow Airport, proceed to a TVM with the National Rail Logo on it and follow the instructions linked below. At Heathrow, National Rail TVM’s are located in the central terminal area beneath Terminals 2 and 3, in the arrivals area in Terminal 4 and 5, and at the platform level in Terminal 5.

  • LNER trains - effective May 15th, 2020. All LNER tickets issued for all travel May 18, 2020 onwards, will have mandatory seat reservation for all ticket types.

Anytime Single Tickets are valid for travel on any train on the date and class of service shown on your ticket and must be used within 2 days of the date shown on the ticket, and up until 04:29 after the second day. You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel. Break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. 
Anytime Day Single Anytime Day tickets are valid in the class of service shown for travel on any train on the date shown on your ticket and until 04:29 on the following day. Break of journey is allowed on all Anytime Day tickets.
Anytime Return The outward part of Anytime Return ticket are valid for travel on any train witihin five days of the date shown on your ticket in the class of service shown. The outward portion of an Anytime Return ticket is valid only in conjunction with the unused return portion.You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel. Break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey continues into the next day, travel must resume up to 04:29 and no further break of journey is allowed except to change trains.The return part of Anytime Return tickets can be used for travel on any train within one calendar month of the outward journey. Travel is allowed until 04:29 on the day following the last day of validity.
Anytime Day Return Anytime Day tickets are valid in the class of service shown for travel on any train on the date shown on your ticket and until 04:29 on the following day.The outward portion of an Anytime Day Return ticket is valid only in conjunction with the unused return portion Break of journey is allowed on all Anytime Day tickets.
Off-Peak /Super Off-Peak Single Must be used on the date shown on your ticket. The trains that you can catch and the times that you can travel with an Off-Peak ticket vary considerably depending on the journey being made, the day/date of travel and the train company that you are travelling with.Where a passenger wishes to stop overnight or the journey cannot be completed within one day, break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey does continue into the next day, travel must resume up to 04:29 and any relevant time restrictions apply. No further break of journey is allowed except for the purpose of changing trains. Please note that break of journey is not permitted on some journeys, as detailed in the ticket restrictions.
Off-Peak /Super Off-Peak Return Valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket. Where a passenger wishes to stop overnight or the journey cannot be completed within one day, break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey does continue into the next day, travel must resume up to 04:29 and any relevant time restrictions apply. No further break of journey is allowed except for the purpose of changing trains. Please note that break of journey is not permittedon some journeys, as detailed in the ticket restrictions. Return portions of Off-Peak Return tickets are valid for travel until 04:29 on the day following the last day of validity (i.e. one calendar month from outward journey). 
Off-Peak /Super Off-Peak Day Single Valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following day. The trains that you can catch and the times that you can travel with an Off-Peak ticket vary considerably depending on the journey being made, the day/date of travel and the train company that you are travelling with. You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel on Off-Peak tickets unless the ticket restriction for the journey you are making does not allow it. Where Break of Journey is available on your specific journey, if you wish to stop overnight or it is not possible to complete the journey by 04:29 on the day following the last day of validity, you may continue your journey the following morning.
Off-Peak /Super Off-Peak Day Return Valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following day. The trains that you can catch and the times that you can travel with an Off-Peak ticket vary considerably depending on the journey being made, the day/date of travel and the train company that you are travelling with. You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel on Off-Peak tickets unless the ticket restriction for the journey you are making does not allow it. Where Break of Journey is available on your specific journey, if you wish to stop overnight or it is not possible to complete the journey by 04:29 on the day following the last day of validity, you may continue your journey the following morning.
Advance Single Advance purchase recommended. Subject to availability. Tickets are valid ONLY on the date and train service(s) shown on the ticket(s).Where applicable, you must travel in the Class and reserved seat(s) shown on the ticket(s).Tickets may only be used on the services of the Train Company (or on connecting trains where shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary. If the route is prefixed with a +, the ticket includes the cost of travelling across London on London Underground, Docklands Light Railway or First Capital Connect (Thameslink Route) services as appropriate to the journey.You may not start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary. Tickets are non refundable.
Evening Day Single Travel is allowed via any permitted route. Break of journey is not authorized except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on your ticket(s). Evening Day Single fares are valid only on the date and train shown on the ticket.
Family Return Valid for a minimum of 1 adult and 1 child (aged 5-15 years old inclusive) up to a maximum of 2 adults and 4 children (aged 5-15 years old inclusive). Break of Journey is not authorized. A seat reservation is needed for all those traveling for the return only with LNER.

VI. Exchange / Refunds

  • Exchange policies vary depending on the type of fare purchased
  • In the Rail Portal: it is not possible to exchange a booking, once the booking has been confirmed, even prior to ticketing.
  • If the ticket is not collected yet: an exchange is not possible in ERA, the Refund Procedure applies. Advance fares will not be refundable, and for Anytime and Off-Peak fares, a fee will be deducted from each ticket refunded, no matter what is the total refund amount. Please consult refund process below.
  • If the ticket is collected in the UK: exchanges can be done locally at any staffed station, specific conditions may apply depending on the fare. The customer will need to retrieve his ticket before exchanging at a ticket window.
  • Refund policies vary depending the type of fare purchased:
Advance fares Non-refundable. If the train the client purchased a ticket for is cancelled or delayed by more than 60 minutes, special arrangements will be made to accommodate the client on another train (although a seat cannot be guaranteed).
Anytime and Off-Peak fares Refundable There is a £5 fee, deducted from each amount refunded, no matter what is the total refund amount. Thus, if the ticket value is less that £5, then it is useless to apply for a refund/exchange.

VII. Check-in procedures

  • Leave plenty of time for your journey and check before you travel.
  • Travel at quieter times if you can - generally after 09:30 in cities and large towns or 09:00 everywhere else.

VIII. Specific to this train

You may take up to three items of personal luggage free of charge not exceeding one metre in any dimension. Excess luggage and certain more bulky items (such as skis) may be carried, subject to available space, at an extra charge.

Customers may take with them, free of charge (and subject to conditions) dogs, cats and other small animals (maximum two per passenger for free) provided they do not endanger or inconvenience customers or staff. Dogs conveyed by train outside of the free allowance may be subject to payment of a fee of no more than 50% of the Adult fare for the journey made. Each train company is responsible for setting the charges that apply to animals conveyed in these circumstances.

For night trains, interconnecting door option is possible, ideal for groups or families. You can carry your bike unmounted free of charge. Reservation of the service is obligatory and must be made at the same time as the purchase of the train ticket (max length 1.8 meters, max width 2.5 inches). Bike boxes, tandems, tricycles or electric cycles are not allowed. 

Usually there is no National Rail services on Christmas Day . On Boxing Day most train operators have no service - however, there will be a very limited service operated by a small number of train operators. Please remember to check if travel is planned on those days here
